The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs certainly got off to an exciting start. On Wednesday, two very contrasting results occurred across the league.
First, after trailing 1-0 early, the Florida Panthers dominated the Boston Bruins in a 6-1 rout to even the second-round series at 1-1. Forwards Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart recorded four-point performances each to keep up with the Panthers’ scoring attack. Barkov had two goals and two assists, while Reinhart had four assists.
Just 24 hours after the Colorado Avalanche erased a three-goal deficit to defeat the Dallas Stars, it was the Vancouver Canucks’ turn to do the same. The Edmonton Oilers took a 4-1 lead due to two goals from winger Zach Hyman.
The Canucks were down 4-2 in the third period, but defenseman Nikita Zadorov tied the game at 13:47 with a clutch shot. Less than a minute later, Conor Garland scored his first goal of the postseason to give the Canucks a 5–4 lead, which they would ultimately hold on to win Game 1 of the series. It was the second time in franchise history that the Canucks won a playoff game after trailing by three or more goals.
The structure of the playoffs is as follows:
- The division winner with the most points in each conference will face the second Wild Card team in the first round. The division winner with the fewest points in each conference will face the top Wild Card team in the first round.
- Each series will be a best-of-seven format.
- Home field advantage goes to the higher-seeded team in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season has home-field advantage in the conference finals and the Stanley Cup Final.
