The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs certainly got off to an exciting start. On Tuesday, both games ended up going to overtime and provided plenty of drama.
The New York Rangers managed to outlast the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3, in a double-overtime thriller at Madison Square Garden in Game 2. After going through the first overtime with neither team finding the back of the net, Rangers forward , Vincent Trocheck was finally able to capitalize on his team’s power play opportunity by scoring the winning goal at 7:24 of the second overtime.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars flexed their offensive muscles in the early stages of Game 1. The Stars took a 3-0 lead over the Colorado Avalanche in the opening period thanks to goals from Ryan Suter, Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn. However, the Avalanche reduced the deficit and star forward Nathan MacKinnon tied the game with a goal early in the third period. At 11:03 of overtime, Avalanche forward Miles Wood completed the comeback to help his team win Game 1 of the series.
The Western Conference’s other second-round matchup begins Wednesday when the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers begin their second-round series.
The structure of the playoffs is as follows:
- The division winner with the most points in each conference will face the second Wild Card team in the first round. The division winner with the fewest points in each conference will face the top Wild Card team in the first round.
- Each series will be a best-of-seven format.
- Home field advantage goes to the higher-seeded team in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season has home-field advantage in the conference finals and Stanley Cup Final.
